About Hipmunk

We make booking travel faster and easier

Hipmunk is a remarkable new travel search site that aims to take the agony out of travel planning. We designed our site to help people who are overwhelmed with pages of irrelevant search results. Flight results are presented in a visual "timeline" that allows people to select the best flight for them at a glance. Hotel results are shown on a map so that people can view where in a destination they will be staying and the landmarks near them.

At Hipmunk, we want to make your experience a lot better and put the fun back into travel planning.

Who We Are

Adam Goldstein, co-founder

Adam is a full-time travel nerd and founded Hipmunk just weeks after his graduation from MIT in June 2010. At MIT, he earned degrees in Electrical Engineering/Computer Science and Mechanical Engineering, and was North American Debating Champion in 2010. Prior to Hipmunk, Adam co-founded BookTour with Wired’s Chris Anderson, and was also the youngest author ever at O’Reilly, writing AppleScript: The Missing Manual at the age of 16.

  • Must have travel accessory: Eyeshades.
  • Favorite activity: Traveling.
  • Dream invention: Supersonic travel with no jet lag.

Steve Huffman, co-founder

Prior to founding Hipmunk, Steve founded the social news site, reddit, in 2005 with his college roommate, Alexis Ohanian. Reddit has since grown into the largest social news site and one of the largest communities on the Internet. In 2010, Adam pulled Steve out of retirement to start Hipmunk.

Chris Slowe, Chief Scientist

Chris is a Physics PhD and expert for all things too difficult for normal programmers. After graduating from Harvard, he entered the startup world through Y- Combinator's first class and became reddit's first employee (pre-Condé Nast acquisition), where he later became Lead Developer.

  • Must have travel accessory: A Scottevest; it changed my life.
  • Best travel: Easy: Honeymoon. Ten day cruise around the eastern Mediterranean.
  • Dream invention: Instantaneous travel (I know the Star Trek stuff to be pretty much impossible for a few hundred years, but I'd settle for being digitally uploaded and downloaded into a fresh body on the far side. In fact, this is probably preferable as I'd get free back-ups out of it).

Andre von Houck, Real Programmer

Andre is a true world citizen: Born in Germany, raised in Russia, educated in Seattle, and now living in San Francisco. He is passionate about writing code and is able to write bugs faster than any other mortal developer. At a young age, Andre finished university, married his wife, and can usually be found bouncing around the office on a big, red ball.

  • Favorite city: Copenhagen.
  • Most ecstatic travel moment: Flying for the first time and looking down into the Grand Canyon.
  • Dream invention: Wireless energy transmission that is not based on electromagnetic waves.

David King, Engineer

Another former redditor, David is into building robots, distributed systems, and mathematical CS. The best way to his heart is through his stomach, or a nice big dataset to mine.

Danilo Campos, Mobile Dude

Danilo was born with a passion for user experience. At 20, he taught himself programming because he was tired of heartless, bland software. When he’s not expressing his Apple fanboyism through iOS development, Danilo enjoys hiking, international travel and the hunt for the perfect bowl of ramen.

  • Favorite hotel amenity: Top-down shower head – its like being in a warm, beautiful hurricane!
  • Must have travel gadget: iPad, for videos on the plane and browsing the web without a heavy, bulky laptop.
  • Most agonizing travel moment: Night train to Paris sharing a couchette with a man who smelled like a corpse.

Florence Gin, Office Everything

Florence has travelled to over twelve countries and has yet to visit what Adam deems the greatest city on earth--NYC. When not reciting airline routes/liveries/airport codes or naming aircraft and airlines flying overhead, Florence manages the inner workings of the Hipmunk office while also juggling the role of online support. Naturally, her ideal trip would be an international mileage run.

  • Must have travel accessory: Passport + 11" Macbook Air.
  • Most ecstatic travel moment: Take off.
  • Last trip: Laos/Vietnam/Bangkok/Malaysia/Singapore/Korea/Japan to visit family.

Jacqueline Tanzella, Press Whisperer

Avid traveler and international thrill seeker, Jacqueline has been found snorkeling in Thailand, bungee jumping in New Zealand, cage diving with great white sharks in South Africa, surfing in Costa Rica, and sky-diving here in California. Jacqueline is responsible for making sure that you, your mother, brother-in-law, best friend, and high school English teacher are all reading about, hearing about, and watching the Hipmunk.

  • Most ecstatic travel moment: Catching a 32lb king mackerel in Thailand.
  • Last trip: African safari.
  • Dream vacation: Eating my way through Spain, Portugal and Morroco.

Joe Gambescia, Business Development & Partnerships

A middle child that dislikes middle seats and a frequent snapper of in-flight photos from the window, he has lived near PHL, DCA, DEN, MIA, and SFO. He never leaves home without running shoes and swim goggles. Most of his travel searches include conferences in exotic locations, surf trips to Mexico and Hawaii, or flights back east to visit his enormous extended family.

  • Must have travel gadget / accessory: Bose headphones + iPad scrabble.
  • Most ecstatic travel moment: First trip across the Atlantic at night from MIA to MAD.
  • Dream Vacation: 30-Day surfing adventure to Biarritz, France.

Ryan Oldenburg, Android Guy

Ryan is a technology geek and startup fan that just moved to San Francisco after graduating from UW Madison. He started programming in middle school and has been building apps for Android since getting the original Droid on its release day.

  • Most ecstatic tech moment: Releasing my first Android app and having it be a hit.
  • Most agonizing travel moment: Hotel without wifi.
  • Dream vacation: Trip to the moon.
