Allow at least two hours to get from midtown Manhattan to JFK.
Keep in mind taxi drivers tend to change shifts around 3 pm to 7 pm—right when demand for cabs is highest. Allow yourself even more time to get to JFK if you are trying to catch a cab in the afternoon from Manhattan.

AirTrain JFK connects Kennedy International Airport with the MTA New York City Transit subway, bus system, and the Long Island Rail Road. AirTrain within the airport is free and provides service 24 hours a day, year-round, to all terminals, parking lots, hotel shuttle areas, and rental car facilities. AirTrain to Manhattan costs $7.50 and takes about an hour. Take the AirTrain from JFK to Federal Circle Station to reach rental car pickup locations.
