Detour from the University area to explore Hogle Zoo and This Is The Place Heritage Park. Recent renovations at the zoo have upgraded and improved many of the exhibits, including an Asian Highlands area and the new Rocky Shores exhibit. Watch Zuri the elephant swim, get face-to-horn with a rhino, and hop aboard the Hogle Zoo train and the hand-carved carousel. Across the street, This Is The Place features Wild-West-era buildings, museums, a petting corral for the kids, and a legendary local ghost. Actors provide educational historical information and seasonal fun. Drive east up Emigration Canyon for lunch or dinner at Ruth's Diner, or head south on Foothill Drive for more dining and shopping options.
Getting Around Salt Lake City
The best way to get around Salt Lake City is by public transit. Utah's TRAX light rail and bus system is free for passengers within the downtown area. Outside downtown, fares are $2.35 per ride or $5.75 for a day pass. During ski season, Utah's Transit Authority operates a Ski Service from various points downtown to several ski resorts. A one-way fare is $4.50. If you plan on visitng areas other than downtown Salt Lake City during your entire visit, renting a car makes sense. Paid parking hours are from 8 a.m.-8 p.m. for a maximum of 2 hours, Monday-Friday. Saturdays are free, with a 2 hour maximum. Sundays are free without restrictions.
