Tips when travelling through IAD

At Dulles International Airport (IAD), the old "dune buggies" for transferring between terminals have been replaced by an underground people mover.
Leave lots of time for getting to and from Dulles International by cab or bus; the traffic around DC is horrendous. However, in a few years, there should be a connection to the Washington Metro.
There are three major airports in the DC area. Historically, Dulles got most of the cross-country flights bound for DC, because the airport closer to downtown (Reagan National) was off-limits to long flights. The government has lifted these restrictions in a few cases, so if you're flying to a place like San Francisco or Los Angeles, you may be better served flying out of Reagan National Airport (DCA) instead of Dulles.

Tips when travelling through ORD

The traffic between Chicago O'Hare Airport (ORD) and downtown (the Loop) can be painfully slow, even outside of rush hour. Take the 'L' (the subway) from the airport instead, which runs 24 hours.
Most of the terminals at Chicago O'Hare, with the exception of the international terminal, are connected after security, which means you can walk freely between the food and shopping in different terminals without re-clearing security.
