Flying into Beautiful Atlantic City

Atlantic City is an iconic American destination. Known for glitzy casinos, saltwater taffy, and a long stretch of boardwalk, this city is a less intimidating version of Las Vegas. For affordable hotels, you'll want to stay away from the boardwalk area. Airport hotels, like Super 8 Absecon Atlantic City, are generally the cheapest. Want even more extra cash for playing the slots and tables? Here's how to save your money for gambling by getting cheap flights and ground transportation.

More About Flights to Atlantic City

Cheap Flights to Atlantic City International Airport

The Atlantic City International Airport (ACY) is mostly served by United Airlines and by discount carrier Spirit Airlines. Spirit Airlines offers the most affordable flights and the most direct flights to ACY. Spirit flies non-stop from Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers, Myrtle Beach, Orlando, and Tampa. During the summer months, Spirit also offers direct flights to Atlantic City from Chicago, Atlanta, Boston, and Detroit. However, these summer flights are usually more expensive than winter flights.

While Spirit Airlines offers the cheapest base fares to Atlantic City, there are extra fees for checked luggage, drink service, and printing boarding passes at the airport. If you decide to fly Spirit, pay for extra carry-on bags or checked luggage online and print your boarding passes at home to avoid the fees.

United Airlines flies nonstop from Chicago and Houston only, but connecting flights are available from both direct flight hubs.

Affordable Travel to Attractions and Hotels from the ACY

While there is a limited number of direct flights to Atlantic City International Airport, the airport offers the most painless way to get to Atlantic City casinos, hotels, and attractions.

Jitney service is available from the airport to Atlantic City hotels for $10 per person, while service from hotels to the airport is available for $15 per person. The airport Jitney route includes all casinos, the Convention Center, Rail terminal, and bus terminal.

For travelers who prefer the freedom of having a car, there are several car rental kiosks at the Atlantic City Airport, including Avis, Budget, Hertz, and Enterprise Rent-A-Car. The drive to Atlantic City casinos is about 20 minutes, while taxi service to casino hotels costs about $31.

Alternative Air and Ground Travel to Atlantic City

An alternative to flying into Atlantic City International Airport, is to fly into Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). This airport offers many more airline choices and direct flight options. Jetblue, United Airlines, American Airlines, and Delta Express all provide service to Newark Liberty International Airport.

Getting from this airport to Atlantic City is a little complicated. You can use train service from the airport to Newark Penn Station. From Newark Penn station, connect to another train or a Greyhound Bus to get to Atlantic City. Bus fare and rail fare together costs about $35 per person and the total trip time is around 4 hours.

Another option, and the more convenient option, is to rent a car from Newark and drive to Atlantic City. There are several car rental shops at the Newark airport and driving to Atlantic City will take about 2 hours via the Garden State Parkway. Finally, for about $200, you can arrange for an Atlantic City Taxi to pick you up at EWR and drive you to your Atlantic City hotel.

Visit Atlantic City in Winter and Spring

The best time to travel to Atlantic City is from December to May. With fewer tourists willing to brave the colder winter weather, hotel and flight prices tend to drop during the winter and early spring seasons. This is also the best time to avoid crowds at the casinos and the airports. An exception to this travel time is New Year's Eve, when many people flock to Atlantic City casinos to test their New Year's luck.

Traveling during the winter means you miss the beach and boardwalk season, but, events at the casinos are always in season.

Exploring the Casinos, Boardwalk, and Convention Center

With all major casinos and the convention center clustered together near the boardwalk, exploring the area on foot is easy. The boardwalk area, from the Trump Taj Mahal to the Tropicana Casino and Resort, is about a 30-minute walk from end to end. If you're a little too tired or had a few too many drinks to make the walk, use the 24-hour hop-on, hop-off jitney. The jitney runs regularly along the boardwalk area, with stops at all casinos, and costs $2.25 per person.
