How Do I Get To And From Koh Samui Airport?

As is the case on most islands, costs are higher than average, but do not believe anyone who tells you that taxi prices are fixed — even if they show you an official looking document. Expect to pay between 300 and 400 Baht ($9 to 12) to get from the airport to Chaweng Beach. Taxis are allowed to charge a 50 Baht starting fee, and then must turn on the meter. You may need to insist that they do this! If they tell you it is broken, ask for another taxi. These are the magic words to repair taxi meters all over the world.

Car rentals are plentiful and available for pre-booking online through major chains such as Avis or Hertz. They should cost around $20 per day. Arrange for the rental company to collect you at the airport and bypass public transport altogether.

Alternatively, stay at a hotel that offers a shuttle service, such as The Amari Palm Reef, Amarin Samui, or Nova Samui. To find out which hotels offer airport transfers, use the “Amenities” feature on Hipmunk and select “airport shuttle”. The selection of hotels on the left hand side will now reflect this filter. Book your heart out!

The airport is only a 10 minute ride from many main spots on the island, so you can have your pick of the wonderful hotels in the Bophut area.

Maya Buri Boutique Resort is charming, immaculately designed, and secluded from the main ring road, perfect for quiet relaxation and dips in the pool.

Are There Other Tips or Tricks to Save Money on Koh Samui?

To save cash, catch a Songthaew — a pickup truck with benches in the back that serves as a group taxi. Make sure you verify with the driver that he is going to your destination city, and then hop in the back. They do not deviate from their route, so they cannot drop you off at exact locations, but if you know your hotel is on “the ring road,” this is a great budget option.

When you’re ready to hop off, press the buzzer, go up to the drivers window, and pay. If you ask “how much?” you will typically receive an exorbitant number. Locals usually pay between 30 and 70 Baht per person, so use this as a guide, depending on the length of your ride.

With a little forethought, Koh Samui can be an amazing budget destination, and flying into its airport is truly like landing in paradise. So get searching now and be laying in the warm sand before you know it.
