More About Flights to Lahaina

Major Airlines Offer the Best Deals

Although Maui is home to three airports, the only one that services major airlines is Kahului Airport, which is on the northeastern side of the island. With that said, because Maui and the Lahaina area are such a tourism hotspot, a number of major airlines fly direct to Kahului Airport from the main land.

American, United, Delta and Hawaiian Airlines all fly to Maui with direct flights from Los Angeles, San Diego, and other points along the west coast. Because these airlines service Maui’s Kahului Airport regularly, they oftentimes offer the best fares. Flights tend to fluctuate depending on dates of travel and flight availability, so it’s important to book your flight in advance.

Keep the Seasons in Mind When Booking

Another factor that affects the cost of flights to Maui is the time of year. Lahaina and the rest of the travel destinations in the Hawaiian Islands experience the best weather during the winter months. Snowbirds from all over the world flock to Hawaii from December to March and as a result, airfare and hotel prices skyrocket.

To avoid the expensive flights, costly accommodations, and crowded beaches, the best time of year to travel to Lahaina is late April through early November. This large travel window experiences pleasant temperatures in the 70s and 80s as well as safer swimming conditions. When looking for budget-friendly flights, avoid a winter getaway and aim for late spring and summer.

Be Flexible When Choosing the Route

If you live on the West Coast, then you’ll have plenty of direct flight options to Maui. Midwest and East Coast travelers should be flexible when it comes to flight routes. Cities like Atlanta, Orlando, and Dallas all offer affordable flights to Maui, but this involves one or two stops along the way.

One of the best, most affordable ways to travel to Maui from the East Coast, Midwest, or even smaller cities on the West Coast is to select a continuing flight from a major West Coast city. Choosing a continuing flight means you’ll have the ability to choose a cheaper flight to the West Coast and a cheaper flight from the west coast to Maui.

Things to Know About Kahului Airport

Maui’s Kahului Airport is located 25 miles west of the town of Lahaina and is separated by the West Maui Forest Reserve. Because of this, road and highway options between the two locations are limited. If at all possible, book a flight with an early morning or late night arrival as the HI-30 and HI-380 are oftentimes congested with afternoon traffic between Wailuku and the Lahaina coast.

The HI-340 is a third travel option and is a coastal highway that offers exquisite views of the islands and waters surrounding Maui. This route loops around the northern side of the West Maui Forest Reserve, which adds an additional 15 miles to the drive to Lahaina. However, this route also experiences less traffic for travelers landing in the afternoon.

Keep Ground Transportation in Mind

Kahului Airport is by no means a large airport, but it does serve hundreds of flights each week. When booking your flight, you should also keep in mind the availability of ground transportation.

Shuttles, public buses, and taxis are available to and from Lahaina and the airport, but these services are first come, first serve, which could leave you waiting at the airport for hours.

The most convenient way to get to and from the airport as well as around the town of Lahaina is by rental car. Although the airport has eight rental car companies on site, you still need to reserve a car ahead of time to ensure a vehicle is available and waiting when you arrive.
