More About Flights to Venice

Best Airport for Flying into Venice: Marco Polo or Treviso

You can get to Venice from two different airports: Venice Marco Polo Airport (VCE) and Treviso Airport (TSF). Marco Polo is the larger airport and about 8 miles from the center of Venice. It receives flights from most major European airlines as well as non-stop flights from the US operated by Delta, Alitalia, and other popular airlines. Treviso is 25 miles from Venice and is more popular with travelers flying in on budget airlines from major European cities.

Nearly all direct flights to Venice from outside Europe fly exclusively into Marco Polo. Savvy travelers on a budget can sometimes save money by flying to a major European city such as London or Paris, then connecting on a cheap flight to Treviso. For example, EasyJet has cheap flights to Venice from Gatwick Airport (London) and RyanAir operates cheap no-frills flights to Venice from Stansted Airport (London).

Getting From the Airport to Stunning Venice

There are lots of different ways to get to Venice from Marco Polo Airport. The cheapest is by bus. Take ATVO line 5 from the airport straight to Piazzale Roma, the entrance to Venice. Tickets are available in the arrivals hall and cost around €6.00 each way or €11.00 round trip. The average journey time is 20-30 minutes. Taxi service is also available, but costs a lot more than the bus. Don’t rent a car to get to Venice. The city is not a very car-friendly city and parking is pretty much impossible.

The cheapest and easiest way to reach Venice from Treviso Airport is by bus. ATVO takes airport passengers to Piazzale Roma in 50 minutes. One-way fares are about €10.00. Barzi bus service is also available for the same price and runs a route from Treviso to Tronchetto, a parking lot just outside of the city. From here you can take public transportation into the center of Venice.

Best Time to Visit Venice on a Budget

Venice is famous for its crowds and regardless of what time of year you visit, there’s really no avoiding them. That being said, peak tourist season runs from spring to early summer. Visit outside this time frame for the best deals on flights and hotels.

Travelers can experience Venice on a budget with thinner crowds in fall and winter, but expect chilly temperatures and heavy rain at times. If you’re looking to save money, avoid visiting Venice during popular events like Carnivale (February) and the Venice Film Festival (late August - early September).

Must-See Highlights of Venice

Venice has many spectacular palaces, beautiful canals, and world-famous landmarks. At the center of it all is St. Mark’s Square. Here you’ll find St. Mark’s Basilica, St. Mark's Campanile (bell tower), and Palazzo Ducale (Doge’s Palace). Not far from St. Mark’s Square is the stunning Rialto Bridge, which spans the city’s Grand Canal.

Of course, half the fun of visiting Venice is exploring the city’s winding network of roads and alleyways outside of the major tourist attractions. Venture off the beaten track to escape the crowds and discover a different side of the city.
