More About Albuquerque, NM Hotels...

Best Times for Budget Rooms

Even during peak season (May to October), rooms are still reasonable, except during the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta the first two weeks of October. During the celebration, room rates often double and can be hard to come by. Book a month in advance if your travel dates coincide.

Albuquerque is also a ski hub for the nearby Sandia Mountains; December and January see a 25 percent jump over regular rates. In the shoulder season (February through April), it's easy to get steeply discounted last-minute deals - even at high-end hotels like the Crowne Plaza Albuquerque, Hyatt Place Albuquerque, and Hotel Cascada - for well under $100.

Transportation on the Cheap

Albuquerque International Sunport is about five miles from the city center; most airport hotels have free shuttle service. If you're not renting a car, the city's public transit system, ABQ Ride, runs from the airport to the city's cultural centers and attractions. Be sure to take advantage of Rapid Ride, three bus lines that make frequent stops at the city's busiest stops. Once downtown, visitors can take the D-Ride, a free bus line that loops from the Alvarado Transportation Center to City Hall, Metro Station, Federal Court, and the Convention Center.  The City of Albuquerque website has complete public-transit schedules and fare information.

Things to Do in Albuquerque

Much of Albuquerque's appeal is the area's natural beauty; don't miss the aerial tramway at Sandia Peak, the world's longest. You'll ascend almost three miles into the sky with a panoramic view of over 11,000 square miles of mountain and desert landscapes. Look for hotels in northern Albuquerque like Motel 6 Albuquerque North or Baymont Inn and Suites, where you'll find rooms in the $50 range. Hikers, bikers, and nature enthusiasts are right at home in the northern part of the city.

If you're in town for casinos or nightlife, you'll find plenty of action in Downtown and Nob Hill. Live music venues, brew pubs, dance clubs, and wine bars abound, all within walking distance from most downtown hotels. You can find rooms for under $100 at well-known hotels like Econo Lodge Old Town, Best Western Plus Rio Grande, or the Holiday Inn Express & Suites Historic. As an added bonus, several casinos offer free shuttles to and from downtown hotels.

Affordable Luxury

It's easy to find deals on more luxurious accommodations in Albuquerque. For around $100 a night, you can get a room in the Marriott Albuquerque Pyramid North, complete with granite wet bar, luxurious linen bedding, and upscale bath amenities. For less than $150, you can get a sumptuous two-room suite at the Embassy Suites Albuquerque Hotel and Spa for the ultimate weekend getaway.

Useful Resources

The Visit Albuquerque website has lots of useful information, including a trip-planner tool and mobile app. You can even download neighborhood maps and event calendars. The Sandia Peak website has information about summer and winter sports and conditions, as well as a nifty TramCam.

If you're looking for a cheap destination with plenty of fresh air, outdoor activities, cultural heritage, and hip urban nightlife, let Hipmunk help you plan an exciting Alburquerque escape.
