Grand Hotel Amrâth — Historic Scheepvaarthuis (House of Shipping) Building

Stained Glass Windows and Marble Décor Pieces

Grand Hotel Amrâth, a member of the Amrâth Hotel Group, is the only 5-star hotel in Amsterdam with a Dutch parent company. Constructed in 1913 to house the headquarters of six shipping companies (and repurposed and renovated in 2007), Grand Hotel Amrâth is an example of the Art Nouveau movement at its best. Everywhere you look, you'll find stained glass windows, wood floors, marble décor pieces, sculptures and carvings, sea creatures, ships, waves, and other maritime themes.

This 100% smoke-free hotel provides an American breakfast buffet at a surcharge in the Seven Seas Restaurant on weekdays from 7:00 am to 10:00 am. Amrâth Bar, open from 9:00 am to 1:00 am (2:00 am on weekends) provides light meals, high tea, and canapés. Seven Seas Restaurant serves Mediterranean French cuisine nightly from 6:00 pm to 10:30 pm. Room service is available 24 hours per day.

Grand Hotel Amrâth offers many amenities. Among them are concierge services, babysitting or childcare services, wedding services, and tours and ticket help. The business center is open 24 hours every day, with meeting rooms and conference spaces available for your convenience. The hotel’s Wellness Centre features a swimming pool, whirlpool, Turkish steam bath, three saunas, and a room with exercise equipment. Spa treatments and massages are available by appointment.

Although the hotel is wheelchair accessible, no service animals are allowed here.

Luxury Rooms Include Free Minibar, Restocked Daily

The individually furnished guest rooms have a free minibar which is restocked daily, including small bottles of liquor. Beds have premium bedding and a down comforter with hypo-allergenic bedding available upon request. Room amenities also include complimentary bottled water, coffee/tea maker, espresso maker, free Wi-Fi, and LCD television, with many guest rooms featuring high ceilings and tall windows for spacious luxury. The hotel provides a remote control device for closing the drapes.

Conveniently Located Near Central Station and Harbor

Grand Hotel Amrâth is near Central Station, the capital city’s main railroad station. This makes it an ideal place to stay for guests arriving by train from other European countries or from Amsterdam International Airport. The hotel is also near the harbor, with canal boat transportation and tours leaving from nearby piers. Hotel guests appreciate the view of Waalseilandgracht Canal from rooms on one side of the property and views of the city from the rooms on the other side.

The Bottom Line

Grand Hotel Amrâth is an example of a hotel group successfully preserving the century-old beauty of an Art Nouveau masterpiece while creating a modern hotel. The rooms are large, the architectural embellishments are memorable, and the location is convenient.

Banks Mansion is a comparatively priced hotel without the architectural charm of Grand Hotel Amrâth. It lacks the beauty of the stained glass windows, wooden floors, marble décor, and artwork. Guests will miss not having the exercise room, swimming pool, and spa services found at Grand Hotel Amrâth.

Condé Nast Traveler
The grandly restored 1916 Scheepvaart-huis, or Shipping House, is a spectacular example of the Amsterdam School, where form trumps function at every turn.
The Telegraph
Housed in a 100-year-old building that served as HQ for a number of shipping companies and is now a national monument. Its zany design sparked a whole new school of Dutch architecture....
Conveniently located just half a mile from Central Station, the Amrâth has all the grandeur of the venerable InterContinental Amstel but with details that lend it more of a sense of humor.
When to go: Late spring, but avoid the tulip-daffodil crowds (around Easter).
