The Olympic Stadium (or Olympisch Stadion, as it is known in Dutch) was built to accommodate the 1928 Summer Olympics, held in Amsterdam. Its first event was in May of that year, which was the Olympic hockey tournament. Since then, the stadium has housed concerts, football matches, and other athletic events. When it was completed, it held 31,600 people. Nearly a decade later, the De Kuip Stadium was completed in Rotterdam, which prompted local authorities to approve an expansion so that the Olympic Stadium had a capacity of 64,000. Visitors can still watch European athletes compete within the stadium.
