Historic Five-Star Hotel in Central Amsterdam

Spacious, Charming Rooms Near Dam Square

The Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam is both a five-star hotel and one of Amsterdam’s most famous historic sites. With roots dating back to the 15th century, the Sofitel Legend was a convent, a hospital, and a city hall before becoming a luxury hotel in 1992. The hotel's construction has changed over the centuries while still maintaining its historic integrity. Flanked by Amsterdam’s famous canals, the hotel is centrally located only 200 meters from bustling Dam Square and the Royal Palace.

The Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam boasts 177 rooms, including 52 suites. Each room incorporates historic details into its decor and furnishings, some of which are hundreds of years old. Renovated by students from the Design Academy Eindhoven, the rooms blend a contemporary atmosphere with Dutch authenticity. Many rooms also allude to the hotel’s famous past patrons. The spacious guest rooms feature Art Deco-styled bathrooms, satellite televisions, and complimentary in-room Wi-Fi. The suites feature separate lounging areas and views of the surrounding canals.

Michelin-Starred Dining Next to Famous Museums

This luxury hotel offers guests excellent on-site amenities for dining and relaxation. Guests can unwind at the Garden Terrace bar or sample fine wines at the Vinothèque with the resident sommelier's help. In all, the hotel features six lounges and bars, including a cigar bar and library. For a bite to eat, guests can enjoy a lobster sandwich, oysters, or fish tartare freshly prepared at the Raw Bar or experience indulgent French fare at Bridges, the hotel’s upscale, Michelin-starred French restaurant.

For after-meal relaxation, the hotel is also home to the soothing SoSpa, a full-service spa spanning two floors that features an indoor heated pool, Jacuzzi, saunas, and a Turkish steam bath. Active guests can take advantage of the SoFit on-site fitness center, which features the latest Technogym Kinesis resistance training system.

Thanks to the hotel’s central location, guests are within walking distance to Amsterdam’s most popular areas and attractions. Dam Square, Amsterdam’s dining, entertainment, and business hub, is a short 5-minute walk, and guests can take a guided tour of the Royal Palace, which features a breathtaking, ornate interior. History buffs and art enthusiasts can discover the Netherlands’ rich cultural and artistic history at the Amsterdam Museum, only a 7-minute walk away, or visit the nearby Rembrandt House Museum, the home and studio of the illustrious Rembrandt van Rijn.

The Bottom Line

The Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam is not only the most historic hotel in Amsterdam, but it also boasts five-star comfort, convenience, and dining for the most discerning traveler. Although many guests enjoy the hotel's authentic charm, travelers who prefer five-star luxury in a more contemporary setting may want to consider The Dylan Amsterdam.

This historic Amsterdam building dates back to 1578 and served as a convent and City Hall before becoming the Grand hotel, and then Sofitel Legend in 2010.

Maria de Medici once stayed in this superb historic building, formerly Amsterdam's town hall. Stylish, refurbished guestrooms, lounges and a beautiful courtyard.
