Fort Myer is a U.S. Army base located next to Arlington National Cemetery. It is the home of the 3rd Infantry Regiment, also known as the Old Guard, the Army's official ceremonial unit. Fort Myer was originally called Fort Whipple when it was established in 1887.
If you want a great view of the city skyline, check out Clarion Collection Hotel Arlington, or the Residence Inn by Marriott Arlington Courthouse. Both are minutes from Fort Myer and have panoramic views of the city skyline. If you are more interested in a riverside view, book a room at the Key Bridge Marriott along the Potomac. Le Meridien also has tremendous river views, but it is much pricier.
Stay at a hotel near Fort Myer so you have an easy trip to the attraction and avoid all the traffic congestion in Washington D.C. When you stay closer to Fort Myer you also get a better rate, because D.C. are usually more expensive.
Fort Myer is a working military base, so access is not available to the public. If you have business at the base, be ready to sign in, show ID and go through a security screen. Access to the base is from one of three gates at the north, west or south off of I-50.
