Visit when School's in Session

The best time to visit any college is during the semesters. Winter break and summers may be more convenient for your own schedule, but there isn't much to see when classes are not being held and so many of the students have left the area. Instead, look for preview events that are targeted at visiting seniors. Regardless, the area's hotel rates don't vary dramatically from month to month. The Georgia Tech School of Computer Science offers free tours for prospective freshmen when school's in session, and open house events take place periodically too — check the school's website for updated details.

Exploring Midtown Atlanta

While Georgia Tech's campus life is a world unto itself, the Midtown Atlanta area that surrounds it is worth exploring as well. The Midtown Mile, Fox Theatre, and the Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia are located nearby.

Just to the east, meanwhile, is Atlanta's largest green space, Piedmont Park, which features 180 acres of woods, sports fields, a lake, and trails for walking and skating. Also nearby are the Atlanta Botanical Gardens, with landscaped grounds, an urban forest, wildflower trails, a conservatory, and a 10,000-square-foot orchid center.

Midtown is home to many excellent eateries too, including some delicious budget choices. Fat Matt's Rib Shack is an actual shack serving up fantastic barbecue. Willy's Mexicana Grill has California-style burritos with outdoor seating. The Varsity is the world’s largest drive-through restaurant, serving appropriately greasy fast food. Don’t leave without tasting its Frosted Orange, a semi-frozen citrus-based beverage that's a local favorite.
