The Blanton Museum of Art, located at the University of Texas at Austin, has almost 18,000 works of art in its permanent collection. It consists primarily of European paintings, drawings, and prints along with a significant collection of contemporary American and Latin American pieces of art.
The Hampton Inn & Suites Austin at The University/Capitol and DoubleTree Suites by Hilton - Austin are closest to the museum and university campus. However, neither hotel has cheap rooms, and most hotels in the immediate area are similarly priced. In the event a room with a view is desired, it's going to come at a cost. Cheaper hotels are available, but tend to be further away from the museum.
The museum is located in downtown Austin, an area home to music venues, restaurants, and cultural attractions. The neighborhood does tend to be noisy and crowded due to the presence of visiting college students and the popularity of attractions in the area.
The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday and closed on Monday. Hours are 10am to 5pm Tuesday through Friday, 11am to 5pm on Saturday, and 1pm to 5pm on Sunday. It's closed on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve and Day, and July 4th. Every Thursday admission is free to all, but a small entry fee is required on the remaining days for all visitors.
