McKinney Falls State Park was originally part of a ranch operation that was founded around 1850 by Thomas F. MicKinney. It changed hands and its final owner donated the property to the State of Texas in 1971.

The campsites have water and electric hookups for conveniences, or rent one of the six cabins for a little more comfort. Fishing is allowed in the park, and no license is needed for fishing from the shore. Swim in Onion Creek, but contact the park about swimming conditions before arriving.
