Hotels near Checkpoint Charlie
Checkpoint Charlie, part of the Cold War that once divided Berlin, is now one of the city’s major tourist destinations. Checkpoint C, or Charlie, was a crossing point in the Berlin Wall that separated the city between east and west. With travel between the two parts of the city severely restricted for decades until 1989, the checkpoint was the site of tense, and even deadly encounters between soldiers and civilians. With the reunification of Germany, Checkpoint Charlie is now in a museum.

More About Hotels near Checkpoint Charlie...

Save on Transportation and Walk to the Museum

A short walk from the Checkpoint Charlie site is the newly refurbished Courtyard by Mariott Berlin-City Center. With comfortable rooms, museums and restaurants nearby, and easy access to public transportation, this hotel would be close to ideal, if not for the expensive and spotty Wi-Fi. The Wi-Fi is free at the Park Plaza Wallstreet Berlin. The hotel, with its stock exchange-themed décor, is in a quiet area but within walking distance to museums and shopping. Skip the over-priced breakfast.

The Berlin Mariott Hotel is a ten minute walk to Checkpoint Charlie and right on the Potsdamer Platz, a square with many shops, restaurants, and a lively nightlife. Ask for a room with a view of the city and you won’t be disappointed. Also mention whether you want a room with a bathtub, otherwise it’s shower-only.

For a relatively small upgrade at the Meliá Berlin you’ll get complimentary breakfast, evening drinks, and even better, a room on the 7th floor with a view of the River Spree. This Spanish-owned hotel features a tapas restaurant and is a 15-20 minute walk to the museums and 2 minutes from the train station.

A Piece of History

A replica of Checkpoint Charlie stands where the original stood, as part of a large open-air exhibit on the Berlin Wall. There are lots of tourist shops and photo ops, usually for a few Euros. Nearby is the small, privately-run, Haus am Checkpoint Charlie, which for just over 12 Euros provides a tremendous amount of history about the Cold War and Berlin. It's a bit of an information overload though and gets very stuffy on hot days.

If you must see the original Checkpoint Charlie it’s further out at the Allied Museum in the Zehlendorf district. Accessible by public transit, it doesn’t have much to see but is free of charge.
