Bloomington at its Best: When to Visit

Because Bloomington is in the Great Lakes region of the United States, it’s subject to some pretty wild weather patterns. But, that doesn’t mean there isn’t an ideal time to visit. For nature lovers wanting to get the most out of the parks and the Chain of Lakes outdoor area, May to September is the perfect time to visit. Highs are in the 70s and nighttime lows rarely drop below the mid 50s.

Bloomington’s tourism low season is from late October until late April when the city consistently gets below-freezing temperatures. Luckily, Bloomington feels right at home when it comes to cold weather, offering visitors plenty of activities from skiing to world-renowned shopping in one of North America's largest malls.

Finding Your Way Around Bloomington

The closest airport to the city is the Minneapolis–St. Paul International Airport, which is only ten minutes away from the Bloomington city center. With the airport’s close proximity, getting to and from the city is easy via airport taxi and shuttle services. Additionally, depending on your lodging, free and reduced-rate hotel shuttles are oftentimes available.

When you’re ready to scoot around the city itself, Bloomington's bus system has stops all over the downtown area as well as routes to St. Paul. If you’re planning on traveling between Bloomington and St. Paul during your visit, the city light rail has 17 stops between Bloomington’s famed Mall of America and Minnesota's capital city.

Low-Cost Hotels Near the Mall of America and Beyond

Bloomington has its share of cheap hotels that will fit just about any traveling budget. The Hilton Garden Inn, DoubleTree, and Crowne Plaza are all low-cost options that are centrally located and near the interstate. For cut-rate accommodations, the Super 8 and Motel 6 are priced just right and are close to all of Bloomington’s attractions.

Arguably the biggest tourist attraction in Bloomington is the Mall of America, an indoor adventure kingdom complete with 520 retail shops. Bloomington provides plenty of cheap hotels near this enormous mall, including the Country Inn & Suites, Fairfield Inn & Suites, and Ramada, which are all affordable and within walking distance.

Escape to the Chain of Lakes

With over 100 lakes and parks covering hundreds of acres in and around the city, Bloomington is an outdoor enthusiast’s paradise. For miles of lake and riverside hiking trails, the Chain of Lakes area has footpaths that connect seven different lakes along the Minnesota River. There’s also plenty of swimming, kayaking, and fishing opportunities along the Chain of Lakes during the summer months.

When it comes to winter, a little snow doesn’t slow the city of Bloomington down. For travelers who don’t mind the cold temperatures, the Hyland Ski and Snowboard Area offers hundreds of acres of snow sport opportunities. Or, head indoors to the Mall of America, which features the Minnesota Sea Life Aquarium, 14 movie theatre screens, and Nickelodeon Universe, a massive indoor amusement park.

Pay the Minnesota Visitors Bureau a Visit

To get the most out of your visit to Bloomington, the Bloomington Minnesota Visitors Bureau website has information on everything the city has to offer. There’s also a visitors center near the Mall of America directly across from Interstate 494.
