Travel in Late Spring for the Best Hotel Prices

The weather in Puerto Rico is amazingly consistent, from about 75 to 85 degrees Farenheit year round. Sandwiched between the busy winter and the rainy summer, mid-April to June is the best time to score a cheap hotel in Puerto Rico.

If you do travel in the summer months, steer clear of the San Juan International Billfish tournament. Held each year during August and September, this world-renowned fishing tournament draws deep-sea anglers and game-fishing enthusiasts from around the globe. As a result, hotels book well in advance and carry premium pricing.

Be ready to pay the highest prices on hotels during the peak winter period from mid-December to mid-April, when travelers from cold northern climates flock to the warm waters of the Caribbean.

Play on the Water but Don't Miss the History

The beaches of Isla Verde are definitely the area's main draw. If you’re heading to the beach to soak in the sun and relax for the day, stake your space early if you want to secure one of the beach’s 50 popular hexagon-shaped picnic shelters.

Head to Aviones Beach, in the Piñones sector of Isla Verde, to check out the best surfing in Puerto Rico. The beach is called 'aviones' or airplanes because it stands at the end of the Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport's runway. Watch professional and amateur surfers take on some of the regions best waves while you nosh on street food from one of the kiosks selling fresh seafood and fried local creations.

Don't miss out on Puerto Rico's important role in history. The Castillo San Filipe del Morro, a 16th century citadel located atop a high rocky hill overlooking San Juan Bay, is certainly worth a visit. You'll be amazed by the 60-foot walls, restored lighthouse and cannons that still guard the harbor today.
