Visit Cologne in the Shoulder Season to Pick Up a Bargain

Cologne isn't one of the cheapest destinations in Western Europe, especially when summer rolls around. As the schools close up for the warmer weather, adults opt to also take time off to jet around sunny European destinations. Cologne is a popular destination when the sun shows its face, as it's one of the warmest cities in Germany.

Unlike many places in Western Europe, however, the crowds descend once more when winter rolls around. Germany is known for its Christmas markets, and Cologne has six of them set up for locals and tourists alike. The markets are busiest during the weekend, so make sure to visit during the week if you're planning a winter stopover.

The perfect time to visit Cologne is during the shoulder season. Look to stay between March and May, and October to November. During this time of year, the weather is cool but pleasant, and there are fewer tourists. Due to this reduced popularity, hotels drop their prices by up to half to try to attract guests, making it easy for you to find something affordable. The only exception to this rule is early March, which marks the end of the busy festival season.

How to Get to Downtown Cologne on the Cheap

You'll likely be arriving at Cologne-Bonn Airport, which has plenty of options for transportation. The priciest option for getting to your hotel is by taxi, and you can catch one from the rank outside Arrivals. You can also head to Arrivals if you plan on hiring a car during your stay. You'll find options from Avis, Buchbinder, Enterprise, Europcar, Hertz, and Sixt.

It's more affordable to take public transport into Downtown Cologne, and it's easy, too. Head to the S-train on the lower floor of the airport and it'll take you directly to the Cologne Central Station. From there, you'll be able to connect to the trams and trains that can take you to your destination. The S-train departs every 20 minutes and costs €2.60.

There are Dozens of Fun Activities in Cologne

You can't visit Cologne and miss Cologne Cathedral (Kölner Dom), which you'll spot from practically everywhere in the city. Make sure to stop at the treasury (€4) while you're there and climb the 500+ steps that take you to the viewpoint at the top of the South Tower (€3).

The cathedral isn't the only architectural marvel in Cologne, and wandering around the 12 beautiful Romanesque churches scattered across the city won't hurt your wallet. Make sure to stop at 4711 Cologne House, the headquarters and origin of Eau de Cologne. For something more modern, head to the Kolumba Museum, complete with the ruins of a late-Gothic church.

Cologne Has a Couple of High-Quality Hostels for Cheap

Hostels are cheap in Cologne and worth checking out if you're looking for a place to rest your head. There are two main options in the downtown area, both of them clean, safe, and in a great location.

Die Wohngemeinschaft is a hostel with a difference. With just eight rooms, each one taking on a different theme, you'll spend your time around attentive staff and be thrilled with your unusual surroundings. Whether you fancy glamming it up in a Bollywood Cinema, getting away from it all in a cabin in the woods, or relaxing in the 60's mod chill pad, there's a themed bedroom for you. With a bar, café, and theatre on site as well, you'll never be short on things to do.

Alternatively, Cologne Downtown Hostel provides great value for the money. You'll be a ten minute walk from Cologne Cathedral, have access to a large kitchen, complimentary Wi-Fi access, and large lockers. Guests also have access to a washing machine, which is tough to find, even in luxury hotels.

Don't Discount Airbnb in Cologne

Want to find budget accommodation in Cologne but don't want to go for a hostel? Take a look at Airbnb, arguably far superior even to staying in a hotel. Through Airbnb, you can rent entire apartments or homes for low prices, especially if you're going be staying long-term. The main benefit of Airbnb is that it allows you to live in a residential area and experience everyday life as the locals do. You'll have privacy, a kitchen, speedy Wi-Fi, and a cozy atmosphere.

There are literally thousands of Airbnb apartments and houses to rent in Cologne, often working out as cheaper than a hotel room. Within downtown Cologne, there are over 500 places available, with 200 of these being entire houses for less than $100 a night. Looking for something even more affordable? Cologne has over 100 options for entire places under $50 a night.
