The Little Mermaid, or Den lille Havfrue as it is known in Danish, is an iconic statue that draws visitors from around the world. Created by Edvard Eriksen, this bronze statue weighs 385 pounds and measures over four feet tall. The design features a mermaid seated on a rock near the water’s edge at Langelinie Promenade. Carl Jacobsen commissioned the statue in 1909 after he had seen a ballet adaptation of the famous fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen. He asked the prima ballerina in the show to model for the art piece, but she refused to display her nude body, so the artist’s wife modeled for the body of the sculpture.
