Former Prison Converted to Four-Star Hotel

Living History Within Walking Distance of Attractions

Once a prison commissioned by Tsar Nicholas in the 1880s, the Best Western is now revitalized as a four-star modern hotel in Katajanokka. Friendly staff dressed in prison clothes greet guests in the lobby and are happy to give directions to nearby sights. Take a 15-minute stroll into the city center or hop on the tram just outside the door. In downtown Helsinki, spend a day touring the Presidential Palace, Ateneum Art Museum, and Helsinki Cathedral.

Fine Prison Dining

In the Jailbird Bar and Restaurant, find exposed original brick walls highlighted by modern track lighting and orange accent walls behind floating shelves. Enjoy a quiet moment on the restaurant patio, where sunlight filters through the maple trees, and watch for birds in Linnanpuisto Park across the street. Satisfy your culinary cravings with a breakfast of omelets, Karelian pies, fruit, and bacon, then peruse the dinner menu, which includes such delights as smoked salmon and filet of lamb. Don't skip dessert, either; order the cinnamon apple topped with mascarpone mousse.

Book a dinner or conference for up to 10 in the restored wine cellar with its arched brick ceiling and cozy sconce lighting. If you are hosting a larger party of up to 80 people, book the assembly room. Once the prison chapel, this oldest part of the prison features arched windows, an upper balcony, tall ceilings, and elaborate mouldings.

Guest Rooms

The 106 guest rooms each feature a flat-screen TV, safe, hairdryer, iron and ironing board, electric kettle, minibar, and free Internet. Choose from rooms with one queen or two twin beds, as well as those with wheelchair access. Shades of yellow, brown, and orange mix with the wooden accents to create a homey feel. The mosaic-tiled bathrooms surprise guests with the more modern polished wood plank ceilings and spotlights. Quaint arched windows and thick walls serve as a reminder of the building’s history and help to maintain a quiet atmosphere, while sleek workstations provide a practical, contemporary touch. Pamper yourself with an upgrade to a premier suite with a personal sauna and sofa bed in the separate living room area.

Bottom Line

If you are looking for a quaint and quirky hotel with vivid reminders of its history-filled past, book your stay at Best Western Premier Hotel Katajanokka. With upgrades such as the free breakfast, 24-hour gym, sauna, paid parking, and kids' playroom, the hotel caters to guests of any age.
