More About Kamuela, HI Hotels...

Staying in Kamuela

Kamuela is not the cheapest part of the island to stay in, but it's not expensive either. The only hotels in town, the Jacarda Inn, the Kamuela Inn, and the Waimea Country Lodge, are perfect hotel destinations. There are also multiple bed and breakfasts and privately rented rooms that serve as a great option for budget travelers.

Getting to and Around Kamuela

There is a small airport about two miles west of town, but the best bet for cheaper flights is the Kona International Airport, which is easily accessible using the free public transport bus, the hele-on bus. Most travelers find that renting a car is the easiest way to get around when staying in the Kamuela area.

Kamuela's Off Season

September, October, January, and February are the peak off-season months for Hawaii when airfares and room prices typically drop, sometimes dramatically. Avoid Spring Break, Christmas/New Years, and the summer months when families and students flock to Hawaii. The town gets packed for the Fourth of July, as the Parker Ranch Fourth of July Rodeo turns out quite a crowd. The Parker Ranch is the largest privately owned cattle ranch in the United States.

In September, the Waimea Paniolo Parade, which celebrates the Big Island's ranching and cowboy traditions, occurs and is just the event to attend if you want to get a taste of local culture. It's followed by one of the best craft shows of the year, Hoʻolauleʻa, held in the Waimea Ballpark. So if crafts are your thing, you won't want to miss it.

Stay Near the Sunset and Star Show of Mauna Kea

If watching the sunset and stargazing on the summit of Mauna Kea is your desire, the Dolphin Bay Hotel is a small retro hotel with a beautiful tropical garden that is about as close to Mauna Kea as you can get. It's also walking distance from all the Hilo restaurants whose delicious breakfasts typically include papayas from their gardens and homemade banana bread.

The Hilo Seaside Hotel is another good choice for staying near Mauna Kea. It has a swimming pool, and its very affordable rate even includes breakfast.

Stay on a Ranch or a Coffee Orchard with Airbnb

Kamuela doesn't have a huge selection of hotels, so finding a place on Airbnb can be a great alternative. There are about 50 listings in the area for less than $100. Does the experience of staying on a ranch, in a rustic plantation house, or in a coffee orchard sound romantic to you? Airbnb lets you have those experiences, plus many of the listings also offer panoramic ocean views.

Another benefit to staying in an Airbnb place is you often have a kitchen where you can cook the local food available at the farmer's markets in the Kamuela area. Cooking your own meals helps stretch your travel dollars. Of course, many of the listings have minimum stays of two to three nights and don't offer housekeeping service, so keep that in mind when booking a place on Airbnb.

Experience Local Hospitality at a Bed and Breakfast

Experience the aloha spirit of Hawaii by staying at a bed and breakfast in Kamuela rather than at a hotel. Aaah The Views Bed and Breakfast in Kamuela offers a glorious view of three volcanos and a peaceful retreat after a full day of sightseeing.

At Makai Hale Bed and Breakfast, enjoy a swimming pool and jacuzzi with stunning ocean views. Their beach service includes beach mats, beach towels, a cooler, boogie boards, and even umbrellas to make your day on the beach a perfect one.
