The Madrid Atocha Railway Station, also known as Madrid Puerta de Atocha, is the biggest rail station in the city. It primarily serves commuter and regional trains along with high-speed trains from Barcelona, Valencia, Seville, and Zaragoza. The station is actually a rail complex that comprises the Madrid Atocha Cercanias and Madrid Puerta de Atocha stations of the national rail system.
The station is located in the Plaza del Emperador Carlos V and many Madrid attractions are nearby, including Parque del Retiro, Real Jardin Botanico, and the Reina Sofia Museum.
The Hotel Ritz offers a high-end luxury stay that is near not only the railway station but also several other Madrid landmarks including the Prado Museum and the Museo Naval. If you are looking for less expensive accommodations, consider Rafaelhoteles Atocha or the TRYP Atocha Hotel.
The benefit of staying near the Madrid Atocha Railway Station is the ease with which you can travel throughout the city and outlying areas. You will essentially be located within a major transportation hub, making getting to where you want to go quick and easy. As with any major transportation hub, especially trains, you may have to deal with a high level of noise and traffic.
The station is located in the Atocha neighborhood in the Arganzuela area of Madrid. The front façade of the building faces the Plaza del Emperador Carlos V where numerous streets meet including Paseo de Santa Maria de la Cabeza, Avenida de la Ciudad de Barcelona, Calle de Atocha, and others.
