Built in the 1960s, Calderón Stadium replaced Stadium Metropolitano, which was home to the Atlético soccer team. Completed in 1970, it has a seating capacity of 62,000 seats. It also has no standing areas, making it the first all-seater large stadium in Europe.
There are a few hotels with views near the stadium including inexpensive choices such as the Hotel Puerta de Toledo and the NH Madrid Ribera del Manzanares. These accommodations, while affordable, offer guests amenities such as massages and restaurants. Upscale hotels a bit farther away include Hotel Emperador and the popular Melia Madrid Princesa.
The stadium is a bit away from central Madrid, so hotels near it may not be convenient to other area attractions. Alternatively, because of its outlying location, guests may find that the quieter environment is a good choice. These hotels are often on the main transportation lines, so getting to and from the city center is still easy and convenient.
The stadium is located in the southwest side of the city center on the shores of the Manzanares River. It is located within walking distance of both the Palacio Real and Plaza Mayor, so you can take in other attraction along with a visit to the stadium.
Tickets for matches held at the stadium are usually easy to obtain as most games do not sell out.
