More About Monterey, CA Hotels...

Stay Away from the Shore

Lodging is pricey on the shore, but accommodation gets more affordable as you move away from the water’s edge. El Dorado Inn, Vagabond Inn Monterey, and Monterey Inn Hotel are some cheap places to stay in Monterey. While you won’t enjoy the water views, these hotels are closer to Monterey’s parks and museums.

No matter where you stay, transport is easy with the free trolley clattering around downtown during summer and the Monterey-Salinas Transit buses operating all year round. There’s garage parking throughout the city, but drivers can save money by parking on the street on weekends and evenings.

Cheap Monterey Attractions

The Monterey Bay Aquarium is the city’s most popular tourist attraction and is loved for its local sealife, including fluorescent jellyfish and playful otters. Admission is a little expensive, but the money aids conservation research so it goes to a worthy cause. Alternatively, pack your binoculars and look for sea otters, harbor seals, and sea lions on the decks near the Monterey Plaza Hotel & Spa.

For land adventures, grab your walking shoes and head to Monterey State Historic Park. Simply follow the sidewalk plaques to discover some of Monterey’s architectural marvels.

Art buffs will adore the Monterey Museum of Art. Both locations have beautiful collections, but you can enjoy free admission and appetizers once a month at the Pacific Street building’s Art After Hours nights.

Monterey’s 4th of July celebrations are legendary, with a parade through downtown Monterey, a free family lawn party on the grounds of Colton Hall, and an evening concert all part of the fun.

Enjoy HI-Monterey Hostel

Monterey doesn’t have as many hostels as many other Californian cities, but its HI-Monterey Hostel offers value-packed cheap rooms. It’s a five-minute walk from the aquarium, Cannery Row, and the city’s beaches, restaurants, and bars. Guests also enjoy free parking, Internet access, pancakes for breakfast, and access to linens, musical instruments, books, and games. Book a private or family room, or save money and meet other travelers in a shared 7-, 8-, or 16-bed dorm.

Save in Wet Season

Monterey is blessed with Mediterranean weather, which keeps guests comfortable all year round. However, rainfall might plague your stay if you visit between November and April. If you don’t mind the showers, you can bag a bargain during these soggy months. Most tourists tend to visit Monterey between July and September, when the weather is idyllic and the festival calendar is full, so if your travel is flexible you can also find Monterey hotel deals in May, June, and October.

If you do want to see one of the festivals, make sure to book well in advance. You can enjoy last-minute discounts at many times of the year, but rooms are scarce when Monterey’s busy.
