The settlement of the Gentilly area dates back to the early 20th Century, including Pontchartrain Park, one of the first African-American suburbs in the United States. For some quality tee time, hit the Joseph Bartholomew Golf Course, named for the African-American pro golfer who designed it. Three universities are located here: Dillard University, Southern University at New Orleans and The University of New Orleans. If you're in town the last weekend of May, don't miss the three-day Greek Festival, located on the corner of Robert E. Lee Blvd. and St. Bernard Ave, just past City Park.
