Airbnb Options in Ottawa

If the hotels are all booked or a commercial experience really isn’t your thing, look to Airbnb for affordable, comfortable lodgings in Ottawa. Airbnb listings include more than 700 lodging options in the area, and there is something to fit every budget. If you want to save your wallet from as much pain as possible, book a shared room; you may be able to find one for under $50 a night. Of course, if you want more privacy, you can book your own room in someone’s home for well under $100 a night.

Many of the Airbnb options in Ottawa are entire homes or apartments that give you a full kitchen, Internet access, and plenty of room to spread out. If you have a big group traveling with you, you can rent a posh modern abode that has space for up to 10 guests for about $800 a night.

Cheap Flights to Ottawa

Ottawa International Airport is serviced by over 45 different airlines and has non-stop flights to and from 50 cities. A flight from Ft. Lauderdale to Ottawa is as low as $344 round trip. Flying from Toronto, tickets are even cheaper at $193 round trip. Most hotels in Ottawa have airport shuttles. The airport is six miles from the center of town.

Best Time to Visit Ottawa

Ottawa has four seasons. Each brings an array of weather. February Winterlude, a three weekend celebration, causes prices to go up. The temperature starts to warm up in March-May with reasonable hotel rates during that time. The highlight of March is the Maple Sugar Festival. The best time to visit is from May to October, but it is also the most expensive. Many business conferences are held during the high season. During that time, the Canadian Tulip Festival is in full bloom. Summertime is for swimming and sunbathing. The mild weather in the fall is the cheapest time to find lodging. December and January can be fun if you like the bitter cold. Don your ice skates and glide the Rideau Canal to town.

Depending on what you like to do and your budget, Ottawa during any season is worthwhile, but the cheapest hotel finds are in April and again in November-January.

Budget Transportation

Most hotels provide a shuttle to and from the airport. Hailing a taxi can set you back about $30. However, if you take Bus #97 from the airport you’ll have to part with a mere $3.25. Once in town, you can explore by foot. Most attractions are close together but, if you're looking to see something a little farther out, the O-Train covers a 5 mile radius around town.

Free Attractions to Visit

Parliament Hill is the first place you'll want to visit. Enjoy the light and sound show during summer nights. Byard Market Square in the heart of downtown is the oldest and largest public market in the area. Or, if you like animals visit the Canada Agricultural Museum. Enjoy free parking on Saturday and Sunday at the World Exchange Plaza or take your photo with a ten meter spider sculpture outside The National Gallery of Canada.
