More About Palo Alto, CA Hotels...

Affordable Fun in Palo Alto

As the birthplace of Silicon Valley and home to some of the biggest names in technology, Palo Alto has big appeal for visitors. To accommodate the variety of visitors drawn to the city by the tech industry and Stanford University, Palo Alto has developed a diverse and robust tourism industry with a decidedly techie spin. Whether you’re a student seeking a hostel or homestay near Stanford University or an entrepreneur looking for a luxury vacation, accommodations that suit your taste and budget are not hard to find.

Planes, Trains, Automobiles...and Apps

Perhaps Silicon Valley’s busiest hub, Palo Alto is extremely accessible. Those with private jets may land at Palo Alto Municipal Airport. Everyone else flies into either San Jose (20 miles away) or San Francisco (25 miles away). The cheapest way to Palo Alto from SFO is on the SamTrans bus KX, which costs just $2. Palo Alto can also be reached by train by taking BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) to Millbrae and then changing to the Palo Alto Caltrain, for $8.50.

San Jose Airport offers a free shuttle to the Caltrain station, where you can catch the train for $4.50 or a bus for $2. Of course, taxis and car rentals are available at both airports; Uber is also very popular and easy way to save money on cabs in Palo Alto.

Stay Close to Stanford for Best Value

You'll find the most popular shopping district in the city on University Road, and nearby pubs, cafes, and restaurants are the best places to hunt for cheap eats in Palo Alto.

Stanford's green, spacious campus is a relaxing place for an afternoon stroll. The university's impressive Cantor Arts Center has free admission to the public and hosts world-class displays ranging from ancient Chinese ceramics to modern sculpture.

Those looking to get outside need not go far. If you're seeking water, head to the Baylands Park; if hills are your thing, go inland to the Foothills Park and Los Trancos Open Space Preserve.

Airbnb Rental Bargains Abound

Palo Alto is well-known for its luxurious, upscale hotels that cater to the wealthy tech entrepreneurs that the city attracts. What is not as well-known, though, is that this tech-savvy city has an extremely high density of Airbnb rentals. The largest hotel booking engines list fewer than 100 hotels in Palo Alto, while the Airbnb listings number in the thousands—with more than 100 listings for rooms under $75. Budget Airbnb rentals tend to be clustered in the southeast part of the city, with a fair number also appearing around the university. Those willing to expand their search to neighboring Mountain View and Sunnyvale will find even more options.

School Holidays Mean Better Bargains

Palo Alto’s ever-bustling tech sector means the city sees a steady stream of business visitors year-round. School holidays are a unique phenomenon in this popular city, because they simultaneously result in a decrease in students and an increase in tourists. The student exodus has one lucky side effect for visitors: an increased number of Airbnb rentals near Stanford University.

Staying Near the Action in Palo Alto

Rather than being centralized, accommodations are spread evenly throughout the city. The Garden Court Hotel*, The Epiphany, and The Cardinal are the only three hotels actually in downtown Palo Alto. The Sheraton Palo Alto and Westin Palo Alto are on El Camino Real within walking distance of downtown and the Stanford University campus. Many of the cheap motels in Palo Alto are on El Camino Real. Some of the more popular budget options include the Comfort Inn Palo Alto Stanford University, Motel 6 Palo Alto, Quality Inn Stanford/Silicon Valley, Coronet Motel*, and Best Western Palo Alto.
