What’s Independence Hall?

It was originally built as the Pennsylvania State House, housing all three branches of the colonial government of Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvania Legislature allowed the Second Continental Congress to use their Assembly Room for meetings and later for the Constitutional Convention. In 1775, the Continental Congress appointed George Washington Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army and in 1781, adopted the Articles of Confederation in the building.

Tours of Independence Hall require timed-entry tickets from March through December. Tickets are free, and are distributed on the same day of the tours, beginning at 8:30 a.m. Tickets are not required in January and February, and the lines during these months are almost non-existent. Tickets may also be reserved in advance but there is a handling fee of $1.50 per ticket.
