South Philadelphia is one of the most diverse areas of the city, with a large Italian-American population and smaller Asian, Russian, and Mexican communities. As a result, South Philadelphia restaurants are second-to-none. If you are looking for an authentic Philadelphia cheesesteak, this is where you will find it. The options for staying in South Philadelphia are few, but there are some affordable hotels to consider, including the Holiday Inn Philadelphia Stadium.

More About Hotels near South Street...

Easy Transportation, Cheap Hotels

South Philadelphia refers to the entire city beneath South Street, making this district a large and diverse area with many micro-neighborhoods to explore. The area is well-serviced by public transportation. Bus lines and SEPTA can get you almost anywhere, including all of Philadelphia's major sports stadiums, which cluster in the South Philadelphia Sports Complex. I-95 runs directly through South Philadelphia, making it easily accessible by car.

There are no hotels on South Street, a vibrant nightlife hub featuring restaurants and entertainment. Farther afield there are a few options. The Holiday Inn Philadelphia Stadium is the best bet for sports fanatics who want to attend a game or two. The Courtyard Philadelphia South at the Navy Yard is the only hotel within the Navy Yard, and is well positioned for guests to explore the areas both north and south. The Ramada Philadelphia City Center, formerly the Skyview Plaza Hotel, is a cheap, no-frills option.

Visit All Year Round

South Philadelphia is busy and vibrant throughout the year. Like the rest of Philadelphia, tourism rates are higher in the summer and lower during fall and winter. However, the biggest event of the year for South Philadelphia is the Mummer's Parade, a local event held each New Year's Day. It is the oldest folk festival in the United States, and features extravagant costumes and great displays of local pride.
