What’s Oregon Historical Society?

Started in December 1898, the Oregon Historical Society originally was housed in the Portland Library Building. In its first year of existence, under President Harvey W. Scott, more than 370 people joined. Two years after it formed, the society put out its first publication, Oregon Historical Quarterly. In 1966, the organization moved to its location on SW Park Avenue, where it is today. In 2010, local voters approved a property tax initiative designed to fund the museum and library in exchange for free admission for residents. Its library and archives feature more than 85,000 artifacts, 25,000 maps, 30,000 books, and 12,000 feet of documents.
