More About Hotels near USS Blueback...

What’s USS Blueback?

Built by Ingalls Shipbuilding Corporation in 1957, the USS Blueback was launched on her first mission two years later. This ship was also the final non-nuclear submarine in the Navy, so when she was decommissioned, it left the Navy fleet with only one submarine that isn’t fully nuclear. Her name comes from two possible sources. First, she may be named after a species of trout found in Lake Crescent in Washington. Other sources say that she is named for the Blueback salmon, a fish that lives throughout the west coast. After the decommissioning process, she was initially laid up in Bremerton, Washington at the Pacific Reserve Fleet. Four years later, OSMI towed the ship to their location in Portland, where visitors can participate in guided tours. She is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
