It's easy for travelers to overlook Puerto Morelos, a sleepy fishing village located between Cancun and Playa del Carmen.  The community, a mix of locals and foreigners, works hard to maintain the charm of Puerto Morelos and aggressively protects the town’s status as a National Marine Park which includes keeping new development to a minimum. 

There are a surprising number of inexpensive hotels in town, plenty of restaurants and a pristine beach.  Puerto Morelos is an ideal place to stay.  Travelers will love budget hotels in Puerto Morelos such as La Casa De Los Ángeles and Buenos Dias Guesthouse.

Charming, low cost hotels come cheap in Puerto Morelos

Hotel prices in Puerto Morelos are markedly less year round than in neighboring Cancun or Playa del Carmen.  However, for the best hotel deals, consider traveling during the early summer months of June and July.  The weather is warm and pleasant; perfect for lounging on the beach.  While hotel prices remain low during August and September, these months typically to see the most rain.

In Puerto Morelos, travelers will find number of low-rise hotels and basic cabañas on the beach, all of which are very inexpensive.

La Casa De Los Ángeles, a charming, solar-powered hotel located on a private beach is just a few minutes from town. The hotel features an outdoor swimming pool and clean, safe basic rooms.  Because this hotel is quite secluded, it’s a great spot for watching sea turtles laying eggs in the morning and enjoying the sunrise on the beach in total solitude. 

Buenos Dias is a basic guesthouse located in central Puerto Morelos which offers a free daily breakfast and Wi-Fi.  Each room has a flat-screen cable TV, private bathroom and a patio.  Travelers who prefer more space should consider booking a studio which includes a small kitchenette.  The beach is only a few minutes’ walk from the hotel or hop on one of the bicycles offered to explore the town.

Puerto Morelos is mainly a residential area and, therefore, travelers will find hundreds of rooms, condos and houses available for rent. If you’re looking for a bit more space, consider booking the Villa Leonardo.  These newly constructed casitas accommodate 2 adults and 2 children, and include a kitchen, air conditioning and a shared pool all for $45 per night. 

Be sure to spend some time underwater in Puerto Morelos

Puerto Morelos is one of the oldest communities on Mexico's Caribbean coast. Don't miss the town’s iconic lighthouse where you can meet some of the local fishermen and organize a private boat tour.  

This charming town is also known for its National Marine Park which is part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef.  The diving and snorkeling here is fantastic, as the reef begins only 500 feet from the beach.  Ask one of the guides who line up at the main pier near the lighthouse to take you out to the reef for snorkeling, or organize a more extensive dive tour with one of the many local operators in town. 

Cenotes, or underground, fresh water filled caves, are unique to this part of Mexico.  The most popular Cenotes near Puerto Morelos are called Cenote Las Mojarras, Cenote Siete Bocas, Cenote Boca Del Puma and Cenote Verde Lucero.  Grab your snorkel gear and ask for specific directions to each of these Cenotes.  Many of these Cenotes are unmarked but locals know exactly how to find them.

Enjoy authentic Mexican food in Puerto Morelos

Pelicanos, located right on the beach in Puerto Morelos, serves up delicious, fresh and inexpensive seafood.  If you head out on a deep see fishing adventure, bring the day’s catch to Pelicanos and they will clean and serve you the fish for no charge, as long as they get to keep the extra fish for the restaurant.

For a unique experience, don’t miss The Little Mexican Cooking School.  This is a full day (10am – 3pm) cooking adventure that begins with delicious pastry and Mexican coffee, and winds down with a late lunch including 7 traditional Mexican dishes which you prepare.

El Nicho, located right on the main square across from the playground, is a local favorite, especially for breakfast.  Travelers rave about their Eggs Benedict dishes.

Finally, John Gray’s Kitchen, a long-time fixture of Puerto Morelos, is widely considered one of the best restaurants on the Riviera Maya.  Expect plenty of American dishes including goat cheese and truffle pizza, crab cakes and mussels.  In addition to dinner, the restaurant is now open for breakfast and lunch.

Getting around Puerto Morelas is a breeze

Most accommodations in Puerto Morelos are within walking distance of the town center so a vehicle is usually not necessary.  If you plan to explore Puerto Morelos, consider renting a bicycle or booking accommodations that include use of a bicycle (many do).

If you plan to explore the greater Riviera Maya, including Cenotes, eco parks or the Mayan ruins in Tulum, you will need to rent a car, take a taxi or organize shuttle transportation.  Taxis are readily available in Puerto Morelos, and these drivers are usually more than happy to wait during your activity and bring you home at the end of the day.  Be sure to negotiate a total price in advance.
