Owned by the Commonwealth of Virginia, the museum opened in 1936. Private donations, funds, and endowments support various facets of operations and aid in bringing in new collections and pieces. It ranks on the top ten list of comprehensive art museums in the country and is one of the largest art museums throughout North America.
