Arcos da Lapa was originally constructed in the mid-1700s as an aqueduct for transporting water from the Carioca River to the heart of Rio. Its 42 arches, which stand more than 200 feet tall, are remarkably well preserved. Today the bondhino cable car that travels from Centro to Santa Teresa runs along the top of Arcos da Lapa.
