Sambadrome Marquês de Sapucaí was built to host the Sambadrome Parades, one of the highlights of Rio Carnival. With bleachers along an outdoor parade ground and at the Praça da Apoteose, there’s plenty of viewing areas for spectators. Praça da Apoteose is sometimes used as a concert venue. Eric Clapton, Britney Spears, Bon Jovi, and David Bowie are among the artists who’ve played here.
One look at the Sambadrome map reveals several hotels within walking distance of this stadium. Hostel Vila Maria, 300 feet from the Sambadrome, is one of the most convenient and affordable with rooms costing as little as US $10. Expect to pay more for local hotels during the busy Carnival season.
There’s so much to do in the area around the Sambadrome Marquês de Sapucaí, including Largo das Neves and Campo de Santana, both within walking distance. It’s also well serviced by public transport. However, you’ll pay for that convenience. While cheap accommodation can be found, it’s not of the standard you’ll find in hotels on Rio’s outskirts.
There are four classes of Sambadrome Parade tickets. The cadeiras are the best value. Frisas are the front boxes, close to the action, but you can take in the whole parade better from the arquibancadas (or grandstand) seats. Luxury suites, called camarotes, are a real treat.
