The Gateway Arch is a famous monument in the shape of an inverted and weighted catenary arch. Designed by architect Eero Saarinen in 1947, it stands just off the Mississippi River and is open to the public. Visitors ride up to the top in a tram, then spend as much time as they like in the observatory.
