Stay and Play Like a Local

When searching for budget-friendly lodging in Salt Lake City, one of the first places to check is Airbnb. Airbnb has over 1,000 different options on the site to choose from, so there is probably something for everyone, from rooms to entire homes. Imagine renting an entire condo for $48 to $59 a night. 

If you do not need an entire house or condo, there are a lot of rooms to rent and a lot of them start at just $30 a night. Maybe you are looking for something a bit more modern located right in downtown Salt Lake City. There is a two-bedroom apartment that you and two other friends can rent for $99 a night. 

How Do I Get around Salt Lake City?

Regardless of whether you find something close to the campus or opt to stay farther out, Salt Lake City has a robust public transportation system. There are commuter trains, buses, and light rail to provide you with access from the airport all the way up to the ski resorts and, of course, the University of Utah campus.

Need to Be within Walking Distance of the Campus

Public transportation offers many options for getting around, but maybe you prefer to be within walking distance of the campus and activities. Here are a few options that are not more than a couple miles away. 

Marriott University Park in Salt Lake City is convenient to the Fort Douglas Military Museum and the university. It also puts you close to the Red Butte Garden and Arboretum and Jon M. Huntsman Center, with an average price per night of $79. 

The price per night is a bit higher at $109 per night, but the University Guest House & Conference Center offers some nice amenities. Or maybe the Hampton Inn & Suites Salt Lake City/University-Foothill Dr. in Salt Lake City is more your style for the same per night price. They both are close to Bonneville Golf Club, Hogle Zoo, This is the Place Heritage Park and, of course, the university. 

Forget Distance — Just Want a Cheap Room

There are times that distance does not matter because you are content with riding the bus or train, plus you just want a cheap room. You will find many options starting as low as $39 a night. For example, take at look at the Camelot Inn & Hostel ($39), America's Best Inn & Suites ($42), Royal Garden Inn ($42), and Avenues Hostel ($49). 

You can get the exercise you miss by visiting the gardens and trails of Red Butte, which is located very near the university. During the summer, Red Butte's outdoor concert series attracts top touring acts each year to the amphitheater at the mouth of Red Butte Canyon.
