More About Hotels near Friedrich Wilderness Park...

The park is past the Northwest Side of San Antonio off the I-10. The Northwest Side is beset with glittering towers housing several corporate headquarters and the high-end shopping centers of La Cantera.

The park itself is a respite from city life with canopy trees, rare birds, and water trails to enjoy.

Cheap Hotels Offset Car Travel to Friedrich Wilderness Park

Because Friedrich Wilderness Park is about 20 miles northwest of downtown San Antonio, it's better hire a taxi or rent a car for the day. Riding a bus is a possibility, but it would take one hour versus 30 minutes via a car.

A benefit to staying downtown is being close to renowned attractions like Alamo Plaza and the River Walk, but if the desire is to stay in a quiet part of the city, consider booking Eilan Hotel Resort & Spa or The Westin La Cantera Resort -- both in the pleasant community of La Cantera with views of the Texas Hills close by.

Another option is booking inexpensive hotels near the highway, such as La Qunita Inn & Suites or the Comfort Inn Fiesta Park Area. The greatest advantage to staying here is being closer to the San Antonio International Airport.

Timing a Hike at Friedrich Wilderness Park

Summer is smoking hot for a hike at Friedrich Wilderness Park, so the best time of year to hike is March to June. Even if a hot peak strikes in the afternoon sun, trees will give some shade.

With extra land donated by Wilbur Matthews and Glen Martin, the park has expanded to 633 acres. Get ready for fabulous vistas, mountain laurels sprouting with purple flowers, and a main water path that leads to a small windmill. The difficulty level of hikes is clearly marked, so choose based on fitness level. Head to the back of the park, where the panorama of downtown San Antonio dazzles.

In early summer, bird lovers can try to spot the Golden-cheeked Warbler and the Black-capped Vireo -- both endangered species.

Thankfully the park is free and open from 7:30 a.m. to sunset, perfect timing to make a morning or afternoon of it.
