See Priceless Artwork on Display

The de Young Museum is named for an early San Francisco newspaperman, M. H. de Young. The museum exhibits more than 1,000 American paintings, including works created from the 17th to 21st centuries. In addition, the de Young has more than 12,000 pieces in one of the largest, most comprehensive textile collections in the country. Select artworks from Africa, Oceania, and the Americas are also on display. The museum is open Tuesdays through Sundays, and admission costs $10 for adults. Discounts are available for seniors, children, and college students. Buy tickets in advance online to avoid long lines, which are more common on weekends.

Experience the Museum’s Unique Architecture

The de Young's design complements its natural surroundings in Golden Gate Park. Warm, natural materials like wood, glass, and stone were selected to blend with the lush grounds. Copper was chosen for the building’s façade since, over time, oxidation will give it a rich patina that will harmonize with the environment. At the northeast corner of the building, a 144-foot observation tower offers panoramic views of the Bay Area. A public sculpture garden, children’s garden, and terrace are located just outside the museum.
