Best Time to Visit Sunnyvale on a Budget

The Sunnyvale area is busy all year, but its peak season is during the summer months, at which time many hotels in the area raise their rates. In addition, on any weekend the 49ers are playing a home game, the hotels fill up quickly and may charge a higher rate.

Spring is beautiful in Sunnyvale, and the city's signature event, the Hands on the Arts festival, takes place in May at the Sunnyvale Community Center. This multicultural arts festival is a full day of family friendly entertainment and workshops to give children the opportunity to experiment with different art forms. Both the Quality Inn Civic Center and the Grand Hotel are great local options nearby. 

In early June Sunnyvale holds its annual Art & Wine Festival along the revitalized Murphy Avenue strip. This event brings together local artists and musicians, as well as tasting stations serving fine wines, craft beer, margaritas, sangria, champagne, and local cocktails.

Cheap Sunnyvale Transportation Options

Public transportation is available in Sunnyvale through the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority. However, many hotels in the area, such as the Domain Hotel, offer free shuttle services to various areas in town.

Caltrain provides commuter train service between San Francisco and San José and the surrounding area. Caltrain connects to many large workplaces throughout the area via free shuttle buses that are open to the public.

Taxi service in Sunnyvale is expensive and not terribly convenient. Most cabs must be booked in advance, although occasionally they are available outside the train stations.

Parks, playgrounds, and picnic areas are abundant in Sunnyvale, and most are conveniently located near hotels. Martin Murphy Jr. Historical Park has an enclosed playground area with a shaded bench for parents. Ponderosa Park's nine acres is divided into different zones for basketball and horseshoes; there's also a multiuse field, as well as a sand volleyball court. Fair Oaks Park has a skatepark and full water-play area. Las Palmas Park's 24 acres are newly refurbished with a Polynesian theme and features a dog park.

Sunnyvale has two municipal golf courses: the Sunnyvale Golf Course and Sunken Gardens Golf Course. Sunnyvale's 18 holes is a par 70 regulation course with lots of obstacles to keep it challenging. Sunken Gardens is a 9-hole executive that's perfect for both beginners and those with limited time.

Low-Cost Lodging

Hotels in downtown Sunnyvale will be the most expensive, so the best place to find cheap accommodations is in either the Santa Clara area or the Mountain View region.
