Ballast Point Park, which was named for author Jules Verne, meanders along Hillsborough Bay and offers fantastic views of the downtown Tampa, FL, skyline. With its huge shade trees and quiet sidewalks and paths, it's an ideal spot for an afternoon picnic or a leisurely walk. Its long wooden pier is perfect for fishing, or just for catching a cooling breeze on a hot day.

Getting Around Ballast Point 

There are some HART bus line routes through the Ballast Point neighborhood, but private transportation, like a rental car, is the most convenient way to navigate, especially if you want to get to downtown Tampa. 

Within the Ballast Point neighborhood itself, there are no national chain or independent hotels; you may find some Airbnb-approved properties at certain times of the year. The LaQuinta Inn South Tampa, near MacDill, is the hotel nearest Ballast Point, and the Howard Johnson Express Inn and Suites South Tampa are located just to the north. Westin Harbour Island, Sheraton Tampa Riverwalk, and Tampa Marriott Waterside in nearby Port of Tampa, are great options, too.

Best Times to Visit

The summer months are peak tourist season in Tampa; travelers find the best deals on hotels during the fall from September through early December. Tampa is a favorite destination of snowbirds and spring-breakers, so the months of January through April are busier than usual. Tampa Convention Center draws many out-of-town travelers year-round to the downtown area. Every year in early February, the Florida State Fair is held in Tampa, drawing thousands of visitors.
