The Intriguing History of the Don CeSar

The Don CeSar is registered as a historic hotel of America. Alternately known as the “pink palace” for its signature coloring, the location was a playground for history’s known and notable including Clarence Darrow and F. Scott Fitzgerald. During World War II, the hotel served as a hospital and convalescent center, then become the VA Regional Office and recreation center in 1945. After a $3.5-million restoration, the pink palace reopened as a hotel once again in 1973.

Since its reopening, the stunning location has served as the site of the movies “Once Upon a Time in America” and “Forever Mine,” the Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers MTV video special, and the “Thunder in Paradise” Hulk Hogan pilot. The hotel continues to service such elite guests as Justin Timberlake and Elton John.

Staying Near the Don CeSar

The Don CeSar occupies its own private stretch of beach, so it’s difficult to get a good view of the hotel from other nearby accommodations. Guests who want to stay within a short drive of the Don CeSar can book a room at the newly constructed Hotel Zamora just to the north.
