More About Hotels near West Tampa Historic District...

A Stroll through History that’s Easily Overlooked

The West Tampa Historic District is bordered by Ivy and Cypress streets to the north and south, respectively. It reaches as far east as Fremont Avenue and west to Habana Avenue. Most of the buildings in the area have long been repurposed, and this section of the city lacks the museums, landmarks and bustling tourist hubs of other parts of Tampa.

One highlight to look out for is the Morgan Cigar building, which was constructed in 1989. Today it serves as an office space for Advanced Promotional Concepts, but it retains its distinctive red brick appearance.

Staying Nearby

If you’re bent on spending your vacation close to the West Tampa Historic District, you’ll have to settle for a hotel around the outskirts of this small area. Unfortunately, there are no hotels directly within the district, and even the closest options don’t afford a direct view of the neighborhood.

The Old West Tampa neighborhood, which encompasses most of the West Tampa Historic District, is a low-income area with a high population density of 5,779 people per square mile, in comparison to 1,862 people per square mile in the city of Tampa. The area is comprised mainly of residences, and not tourist attractions.

Historic Hotel Choices in the Tampa Area

For accommodations within a short drive of the West Tampa Historic District, local Howard Johnsons are among the best options. Both the Howard Johnson Plaza Tampa-Downtown and the Howard Johnson Hotel Tampa Airport Stadium are reasonably close to this area. If you’re interested in an affordable hotel that differs from these national chain options, the University Inn Tampa* is located nearby as well. Low weekly rates make this a budget-friendly choice for an extended vacation.

Historic Ybor City to the east, a Latin district founded by cigar manufacturers, offers several options for affordable accommodations that boast old-time flair. Airbnb features unique bungalows and homes, and is just a short drive from the West Tampa Historic District. Options such as the Hampton Inn & Suites Tampa/Ybor City/Downtown and the Hilton Garden Inn Tampa Ybor Historic District offer comfortable accommodations with quality amenities like complimentary WiFi and on-site dining.
