More About Hotels near University of Tokyo...

Tokyo has the reputation of being a very expensive city, but there are several budget options ranging from backpacker hostels like Sakura and simple hotels such as Forest Hongo, all located within a short distance from the university. Unlike in many other cities, Tokyo budget hotels and hostels are usually sparkling clean and with all mod cons.

If you fancy trying a uniquely Japanese experience, opt for capsule hotels like Sauna & Capsule Hotel Hokuo or Capsule Kinuya Hotel Ueno, all around the corner from the university's main campus in Hongo.

Budget Hotels and Hostels

There are tons of youth hostels in Tokyo, not very different from hostels anywhere else in the world; they are busy and usually noisy, with a mixture of dorms and private rooms, with or without ensuite bathroom. Sakura Hotel and Hostel is an award-winning budget accommodation chain, offering four properties around Tokyo. Sakura's Asakusa Hostel offers a buzzing international atmosphere, a short distance from the university's main campus.

In terms of price-quality ratio, Hotel Forest Hongo is hard to beat. Located walking distance from the university, in a green area that gives the hotel its name, Forest Hongo's single rooms are only slightly more expensive than hostel privates but offer far more in terms of comfort and amenities.

Go Japanese in a Capsule Hotel

The idea of spending the night in a capsule hostel may sound daunting, but it's actually fun, and capsule hotels are a terrific value compared to single private rooms. Prices usually range from Y3500 to Y5000 for an individual capsule, which is not a glass-fronted coffin; it is usually large enough to recline and includes a TV and reading light.

Two great capsule hotels near the university are Sauna & Capsule Hotel Hokuo and Capsule Kinuya Hotel Ueno. They are both located in Ueno, just east of the university's main Hongo campus, well connected with public transportation. Both offer standard capsules at affordable prices. Sauna & Capsule Hotel Hokuo also has a Nordic-style sauna on the premises.

Affordable Airbnb Options

There are several Airbnb options in Tokyo, usually offering more than budget hotels and hostels for the same price.

Listings near the university include private rooms and whole apartments for just over Y7000. Some Tokyo Airbnb listings offer bicycle rental and the opportunity to share a traditional Japanese meal with the host family, usually for a little extra.

Getting about: Tokyo University Location

Tokyo University's main campus is located in Hongo, a district in the northern part of town. It's just north of the Tokyo Imperial Palace, the Emperor's residence. Hongo lies east of Ueno, home to the famous Ueno Park, one of the main locations to view cherry blossoms in the spring, and many other cultural attractions such as the Tokyo National Museum and the National Museum of Culture and Science.

Tokyo University is also a short distance away from Asakusa, a picturesque riverside neighborhood where the spirit of old Tokyo lives on, with narrow streets and back alleys, and the wonderful Senso Temple.

Tokyo has a wonderfully efficient subway system, with color-coded lines reaching every corner of the city, making even the furthest reaches of this huge city only a short hop away.

When to Get the Cheapest Hotel Rooms

To avoid extortionate hotel room fares, avoid visiting Tokyo during Japanese public holidays such as shogatsu (New Year, from December 29th to January 6th), Golden Week (April 29th to May 5th) and the O-Bon festival in mid-August. In these periods, several restaurants and shops close as well.

Sakura (cherry-blossom) season in the spring is also a very busy time, and hotel prices rise accordingly.
