“The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page.”
Gastown has been named a National Historic Site of Canada as Vancouver's original downtown. The district was named after "Gassy" Jack Deighton, a popular local barkeeper. This neighborhood lures visitors with historical sites, indie eateries, quality coffee shops and microbrews at Bitter and the Alibi Tasting Room. Take your cue from the steam clock on Water Street, and let off some steam after hours in Gastown. Areas near Downtown Eastside can get a bit shady, so be alert at night.
