More About Waikoloa, HI Hotels...

Watch the Sunset From Anaehoomalu Bay

Anaehoomalu Bay, also known as A-bay, is one of the most beautiful places in Waikoloa. It is famous for its historic royal fish ponds, amazing sunsets, and great snorkeling spots. This area features plenty of affordable hotels, many of which are located near the beach. The Hilton Waikoloa Village, for instance, offers the best packages in the area. It is a huge resort that occupies 62 acres and features its own lagoons, waterfalls, and tropical gardens.

Save Money by Visiting in Spring

The start of the dry season in late March is when you should leave reality behind and visit Waikoloa. The temperatures are moderately warm, and the rain clouds never show up, so it's a great time for outdoor and beach activities. But more importantly, it is the end of the high season, characterized by lower hotel prices and great travel bargains. You can find reasonable rates on luxury condos like the Aston Shores at Waikoloa

Avoid the Triathlon Crowds

The only major event that draws large crowds to this part of the island is the Lavaman Waikoloa Triathlon held every March. Another busy time to avoid is Japan's Golden Week that runs from the last week of April to the first week of May during which many Japanese visitors arrive on national holiday.

Rent a Car to Avoid High Airport Shuttle Fares

The two nearest airports to Waikoloa, Waimea-Kohala Airport (18 miles away) and Kona International Airport at Keāhole (26 miles away), both offer shuttle service to beach resorts. However, these fares are typically extremely high, starting from $50 per person one way. Renting a car from one of the airports, therefore, is often your cheapest transportation option. For example, Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort and Spa sells packages that include both hotel and car reservations for just $146 per night. Alternatively, you can save some money and share a bus with other travelers using the SpeediShuttle service, which costs around $52 per person.

Take Advantage of Airbnb Selections

Airbnb has more than 300 offers in the Waikoloa area, from tent cabins that cost just $50 per night to ranches that go for $1500 a night. The cheapest and the most attractive Airbnb options are private rooms with attached bathrooms and unbelievable ocean views. In most cases such rentals include free amenities such as Wi-Fi, on-site laundry, pool access, and even housekeeping. A big advantage to renting an Airbnb is having access to kitchens with all the necessary utilities, allowing you to avoid expensive hotel dinners. In fact, home-away-from-home lodgings are the cheapest on the island, offering deals that are hard to resist.

A Unique Location From Airport and Onward

Waikoloa is a great spot to relax, even when on business. The unique Kona International Airport is primarily outdoors, so be ready to acclimate fast to the tropical environment when you arrive. This area has very few options for airport hotels, which fortunately has given rise to some competitively priced Airbnb options.

Comforts of Home

Truly an island paradise, Waikoloa is lacking in the traditional spread of hotels within a mile from the airport. Keep your stay simple by taking a shuttle to one of the car rentals less than a mile away, and staying at an Airbnb. This island is fairly small with close attractions, and a taxi would be unnecessarily expensive.

Closer to The Shore and Events

Of course, being houses, the Airbnbs are not as close to the center of Waikoloa's attractions as the hotels. While the hotels all capitalize on their beachfront location with a high price, one affordable option is Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort & Spa, or the Paniolo Greens at Waikoloa Village*. Beware though, there are very few cheap mid-rate hotels in the area.
