CasaCalma*: Eco-Friendly in Buenos Aires

Plant-Wrapped Building

CasaCalma, a privately owned boutique hotel in central Buenos Aires, is one of the few eco-friendly hotels in Argentina. The property is less than a 15-minute walk to sightseeing attractions such as Teatro Colon, Museo de Armas de la Nacion, Plaza San Martin, and Obelisco de Buenos Aires. The hotel owners do not do anything which takes away from the environment. Tress and vines encircle the hotel, acting as filters to control the building’s interior temperature. Synthetic fiber fabric, instead of conventional wallpaper, covers the guest room walls. Local authorities recycle the kitchen’s used cooking oil in fuel production.

Nearby Sightseeing Venues

Teatro Colon, an opera house with acoustics among the five best in the world, offers tours in English if your schedule doesn’t permit attending an opera or ballet. Museo de Armas de la Nacion (Argentine Weapons Museum) is a venue showcasing armor, swords, guns, and cannons. The display of miniature replicas of military uniforms worn during the past 500 years is popular. Plaza San Martin is an urban park in front of San Martin Palace. Tour the palace, ceremonial headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Relations. Obelisk of Buenos Aires, in the middle of an intersection, commemorates the city’s founding.

Bamboo Bicycles and Honesty Bar

CasaCalma has a fleet of bamboo bicycles for guests to borrow. It is easier to tour Buenos Aires by bicycle than by renting a car. Honesty Bar is an area in the hotel filled with snacks and drinks. Guests may take what they want and, via an honor system, charge the items to their hotel room.

Double Jacuzzi in Guest Rooms

There are 17 guest rooms in CasaCalma, 11 Superior rooms and six Deluxe rooms. Among the amenities in both types of lodging are a king-sized bed or two twin beds, pillow menu, wireless Internet access, cable television, minibar, and DVD player. The only difference between the two types is that the Deluxe has a sauna in addition to the double Jacuzzi.

The Bottom Line

CasaCalma’s owners are proud of the calm, peaceful, eco-friendly environment provided for their guests. The hotel rooms are clean and large. The food served is excellent. Staff members are English-speaking and helpful. Tango lessons are available. Serena Hotel is comparably priced. The carpets in some rooms have stains. The Wi-Fi signal is weak. The staff members understand English, but want to speak Spanish, even to non-Spanish-speaking guests.

Expert Reviews
Fodor's
This boutique property and "wellness hotel" in the heart of downtown Buenos Aires has taken the concept of in-house spa to a new level.
Frommer's
They've worked very hard to make this boutique hotel supremely quiet and relaxing—not an easy task considering it's located in one of the busiest parts of the city.
Time Out
Looking to escape the big-city traffic and pollution, the headlines, the heat or whatever? A few days decompressing in this oasis of tranquillity should do the trick.
