Cheap Rooms in an Excellent Location

An Inexpensive Hotel Steps From the Duomo

The Hotel De Lanzi offers budget priced rooms in a location that iss literally yards away from the famous Duomo cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore. It's also less than a 15-minute walk from the Firenze Santa Maria Novela train station. It offers a convenient place to stay for those who want to explore the old city of Florence and not have to spend all day traveling to popular destinations. The hotel isn't nearly as elegant as the nearby Hotel Hermitage in Florence, but it has an advantage in its location.

Walk to Famous Destinations Such as Giotto's Campanile

Giotto's Campanile, or Giotto's bell tower, is within walking distance of the hotel. The bell tower is a beautiful piece of free-standing architecture that turned a practical purpose structure into artwork. A bell tower is also a watch tower, and was manned by people whose job was to keep an eye out for fires and invaders. The Campanile is a perfect example of Renaissance exuberance with its statuary and decorative exterior.

Also nearby is the Uffizi Gallery, home to famous works of art that date from the 15th Century onward. It's also home to Michelangelo's "David" and other pieces he created. The Ponte Vecchio is also a short distance away, and there you can look into the life of a Medieval merchant.

A Comfortable Place to Stay After a Long Day Sightseeing

The lobby of the hotel is reminiscent of the entryway of a Florence palazzo, but rooms are modern and comfortable. Room options include Standard Double or Twin, Standard Triple, Single, and Family Room. All rooms come equipped with a flat screen TV and satellite, an in-room safe, air conditioning, and available wireless Internet. A complimentary continental breakfast is served daily.

The Bottom Line

The low cost of a hotel room at the De Lanzi is reflected in its antiquated interior and mechanicals. Rooms are on the small side and upgrading to a larger one costs extra. Its proximity to the cathedral means listening to the daily tolling of the church bells. Those who prefer to listen to the bells can upgrade to a room that has a view of the cathedral for a small extra fee. The continental breakfast buffet has quality food items, and staff members keep it replenished.

Expert Reviews
Frommer's
The beds have firm mattresses and spreads embroidered in an antique Florentine pattern. The accommodations, in fact, are done tastefully for a hotel of this price.
A few rooms on the front get a window-filling side view of the Duomo, but for silence request a room overlooking the central courtyard.
